As Glass Cannon Unplugged, we have a very straightforward mission. We choose video games that we believe have significantly influenced their genre and that just appeal to us in terms of translating them to the language of tabletop.

Charting The Unknown – Unlock #3!

Charting The Unknown – Unlock #3!

First off, it might just be worth mentioning that already over 44,000 of you are following the Kickstarter campaign for Don’t Starve: The Board Game! In all honesty, we find that to be… staggering! We’re elated to have you in our camp!

Today’s update provides valuable insight into the game’s setting, the way it handles exploration, an iconic inhabitant that you might encounter on your way through the wild, and—as promised – some newly unlocked content!

O Grave New World…

The secondary world which serves as the setting for Don’t Starve: The Board Game is a truly intriguing place. First of all, it’s weird – the good kind of weird, luckily – which makes you want to be part of it, even if it’s not exactly of your own volition. It’s also unpredictable. Each time you play, it dares you to discover it anew. It helps that it’s practically boundless – a sandbox without a frame, or an escape room without walls or doors. You probably know already that it’s also not the safest of places – it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that it actively wants you to die.

In Ignotum Tendimus

Since exploration is what drives the heart of the Survivor, sitting at camp all day is not an option – you’re bound to journey out into the wild sooner rather than later. In game terms, this means drawing map tiles from a set of biomes. These offer various opportunities for scavenging and gathering resources. They also come with locations, that is specific spots encountered by a Survivor in the biome. These are represented by randomly drawn cards and include special features, which become available when you meet their required conditions (e.g., having a specific item). To give the simplest example: want to dig into a gold vein? Get yourself a pickaxe!

Here Be Monsters

The other thing they offer is, obviously, peril. You’re just a visitor in a world already inhabited by a grotesque bestiary, so armor up and craft yourself a spear. The monsters in this game will either charge at you the moment they see you or bide their time until you move in closer to gather a valuable resource that they just happen to be using for a pillow.

If you choose to fight, you’re in for some fast, dice-based combat, where you roll both for the Survivors and the monsters to see who comes out on top. And it’s not all about tooth and nail—some of the nastier baddies have special abilities that can make you bite the dust even faster than you’d expect.

Creature Feature

Let’s give the spotlight to the first mob (that is, mobile creature) featured in Don’t Starve: The Board Game: the Pig. Unlike their real-world counterparts, these friendly chaps prefer to walk upright. They’re also perfectly willing to share the world with others, including you, and enjoy the simple things in life: sleep, food, and sunshine. They’re easily scared, so if you happen to be a horrific boy-turned-spider, best keep your distance.

Curiosity Killed the Survivor

This week’s unlocked Curiosity is a set of four new Location cards – one per each biome in the game. Now take a good look at what they are, close your eyes, let them draw you in, and cherish this moment, for it will make reliving it once they hit your table that much more fulfilling.

Just don’t forget to follow Don’t Starve: The Board Game to get them for free as part of your follower gift, the Constant Curiosities mini-expansion, along with a whole lot of ridiculously cool goodies.

And remember – more followers means more Curiosities, so spread the word!
